Resveratrol: A Natural Polyphenol for Healthy Aging

Resveratrol is a natural polyphenol with potential antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. Research suggests that it may support bone health, cardiovascular function, skin aging, and liver health by regulating pathways related to oxidative stress, inflammation, vascular function, and lipid metabolism. As a result, resveratrol has attracted growing interest for use in dietary supplements, functional foods, and cosmetics, although further research is needed to fully establish its efficacy and applications.

 

As people pay increasing attention to healthy aging and long-term wellness, natural compounds that may help the body cope with oxidative stress and inflammatory processes have become an important area of research. Among these compounds, resveratrol has attracted considerable interest from both the scientific community and the health industry.

Resveratrol is a naturally occurring polyphenolic compound found in grapes, Japanese knotweed, berries, peanuts, and other plants. Its diverse biological activities have led to extensive research into its potential role in bone health, cardiovascular health, skin aging, and liver protection. Chemical Properties of Resveratrol

Resveratrol is a natural non-flavonoid polyphenolic compound belonging to the stilbene polyphenol family. In 1939, Japanese scientist Michio Takaoka first isolated this compound from the rhizome of Veratrum album and determined its chemical structure, with the molecular formula C14H12O3. In 1963, American chemists Varny and Wall successfully extracted resveratrol in larger quantities from the roots of Polygonum cuspidatum, a traditional Chinese medicinal plant.

Resveratrol was listed in the American book The Anti-Aging Holy Grail as one of the “100 most effective anti-aging substances.” It is widely found in plants such as grapes, Japanese knotweed, berries, and peanuts. When plants are exposed to pathogen attacks or unfavorable environmental conditions, resveratrol can be synthesized in large quantities as a phytoalexin. It is mainly produced to help plants cope with mechanical damage, bacterial infection, ultraviolet radiation, and other stresses. For this reason, resveratrol is also known as a plant “defense molecule.”

Multiple Potential Benefits of Resveratrol

1) Supporting Bone and Joint Health

Resveratrol has demonstrated potential applications in bone protection and the prevention and management of osteoporosis. By activating the SIRT1/AMPK/Nrf2 signaling pathway, resveratrol may enhance the activities of antioxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), thereby reducing reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels and protecting osteoblasts from oxidative stress-related damage.

At the same time, resveratrol may inhibit inflammatory signaling involving nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), thereby reducing osteoclast differentiation. In addition, resveratrol may promote osteoblast proliferation, differentiation, and matrix mineralization. By regulating the balance of the RANKL/OPG signaling pathway, it may also inhibit osteoclast formation and help maintain the dynamic balance of bone remodeling.

2) Protecting Cardiovascular Health

Resveratrol has vasodilatory effects. Studies have found that resveratrol can effectively inhibit norepinephrine-induced vascular contraction, and the extent of inhibition is related to the dose of resveratrol used.

In terms of cardiovascular protection, resveratrol has several potentially beneficial effects, including reducing blood viscosity, inhibiting platelet aggregation, and promoting vasodilation. These effects may help reduce lipid deposition, prevent thrombus formation, and improve the progression of atherosclerosis.

3) Counteracting Skin Aging

As a natural polyphenolic compound, resveratrol has significant anti-aging activity. It can enhance antioxidant enzyme activity and reduce the levels of oxidative products, potentially helping to protect the skin against photoaging and improve skin condition.

Its proposed mechanisms include scavenging free radicals generated by ultraviolet radiation, regulating signaling pathways associated with photoaging, and inhibiting the activity of matrix metalloproteinases to reduce collagen degradation, thereby contributing to protection against skin photoaging.

4) Protecting Liver Health

Resveratrol may exert protective effects on the liver by inhibiting the expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and the production of nitric oxide (NO). In an animal model of acute alcoholic liver injury, resveratrol was found to effectively improve lipid peroxidation-related damage and suppress inflammatory responses, thereby reducing the extent of liver injury.

In addition, resveratrol may inhibit the expression of fatty acid synthase (FAS) in the liver and promote fatty acid β-oxidation, reducing fat accumulation in the liver. These findings suggest that resveratrol may have potential for improving non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.

According to market estimates, the global resveratrol market is projected to grow from USD 169.03 million in 2025 to USD 330.29 million by 2034. During the forecast period from 2026 to 2034, the market is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 7.73%.

At present, resveratrol is mainly used in dietary supplements, functional foods, and cosmetics.

Due to its multiple potential benefits, resveratrol is widely used in the functional food and dietary supplement sector. Product forms include tablets, capsules, oral liquids, and other dosage forms.

2) Conventional Foods

Resveratrol may help promote vasodilation and blood flow, which may support the transportation of water, electrolytes, oxygen, and other substances within the body.

3) Cosmetics

Anti-aging skincare products launched by beauty brands may contain resveratrol. Brands claim that these products can provide deep hydration and help reduce the appearance of fine lines.
