Equol and Menopause Health: Emerging Ingredients for Women’s Wellness

Menopause is a natural stage of aging, but hormonal changes during this period can affect women’s physical and emotional well-being. This article explores equol, soy isoflavones, fermented rice bran, black cohosh, and other emerging ingredients for menopause health. It also reviews current research on their potential benefits and highlights the growing global market for menopause-focused dietary supplements.

As women’s participation in the workforce continues to rise, the impact of menopausal symptoms on productivity and quality of life has become an increasingly important social and health issue. At the same time, declining estrogen secretion with age is closely associated with changes in blood pressure, blood glucose regulation, low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol levels, body weight, and other aspects of women’s health. As a result, there is growing interest in scientifically supported nutritional approaches for women during and after menopause.

Among the ingredients attracting increasing attention are equol, soy isoflavones, fermented rice bran, black cohosh extract, red clover extract, vitamin D, magnesium, marine pine bark extract, Bacopa monnieri extract, ashwagandha extract, evening primrose oil, angelica root extract, chasteberry, licorice extract, fenugreek extract, and beta-cryptoxanthin. Equol, in particular, has emerged as an interesting soy-derived metabolite because it can interact with estrogen receptors and has been investigated for its potential role in supporting menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes and night sweats. Meanwhile, fermented rice bran combines polyphenols, dietary fiber, and other bioactive compounds that may contribute to gut microbiota and metabolic health. With consumers increasingly interested in aging, hormone-free solutions, the global menopause supplement market is attracting growing attention from the dietary supplement and functional ingredient industries.

As women live longer and remain active in professional and social life for longer periods, supporting health during the menopausal transition has become an increasingly important area of nutrition and functional food research. Menopause is a natural physiological process, but the accompanying changes can affect multiple aspects of physical and emotional well-being. This has created new opportunities for nutritional ingredients and dietary supplements designed to support women’s health during this life stage.

A New Menopause Support Supplement Launched in Japan

A Japanese company specializing in gut microbiome testing services has introduced a supplement designed to help relieve mental and physical fluctuations experienced by menopausal women.

The product primarily contains equol and fermented rice bran (HMPA).

Equol in this product is a health-related compound produced from soy isoflavones through the action of intestinal bacteria. Fermented rice bran is produced using traditional Japanese fermentation technology, in which rice bran polyphenols are fermented with lactic acid bacteria to create a functional health ingredient.

The gut is one of the most important organs in the human body and is often referred to as the “second brain.” Gut microbiome testing has found that many women in their 40s are unable to produce equol in their bodies. In addition, gut microbiome diversity tends to decline with age. Furthermore, people who produce equol have been found to have more diverse intestinal bacteria than those who do not produce equol.

Therefore, taking supplements that directly provide equol represents a new approach to self-care. It may help regulate gut microbiota balance and support estrogen-related physiological processes.

Further Research on Equol

Equol is a specific intestinal metabolite of daidzein, one of the isoflavones found in soy. However, not all individuals are able to convert soy isoflavones into equol.

Equol can bind to human estrogen receptors, including ERα and ERβ, and exert estrogen-like activity.

By mimicking certain actions of estrogen, equol has been investigated for its potential to reduce the frequency of hot flashes and night sweats in menopausal women.

One study found that compared with placebo, supplementation with equol at 10–30 mg per day for 8–12 weeks was beneficial for major menopausal symptoms, including hot flashes and arterial stiffness.

Another analysis showed that among menopausal women who were either equol producers or non-producers, equol supplementation significantly reduced hot flash scores, including the frequency and/or severity of hot flashes.

Equol may therefore have potential as a complementary nutritional approach for women experiencing vasomotor symptoms.

Fermented Rice Bran and Menopause Health

Rice bran can be converted into fermented rice bran through fermentation with lactic acid bacteria. Compared with unfermented rice bran, fermented rice bran has been reported to contain higher levels of polyphenols and exhibit increased antioxidant activity.

Fermented rice bran contains polyphenols and dietary fiber, both of which may regulate the gut microbiota and influence the production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), potentially contributing to improvements in menopausal symptoms.

In addition, fermented rice bran contains gamma-oryzanol, which may help reverse lipopolysaccharide-induced cognitive and memory impairments by promoting anti-inflammatory molecular responses in the brain.

What Are the Popular Ingredients for Menopause Health?

In the past, Japanese products targeting women primarily focused on applications such as weight management, skincare, warming or maintaining surface temperature of the hands and skin, maintaining warmth in peripheral areas such as the fingertips, and relieving leg swelling.

Over the past two years, new applications have emerged, including support for temporary premenstrual mood changes and menopausal symptoms. This indicates that women’s health applications are becoming increasingly diverse.

Menopause most commonly occurs between the ages of 45 and 55. When menstruation has stopped continuously for 12 months, after pregnancy has been excluded, menopause can be diagnosed.

Menopause is a natural physiological process, and its symptoms can vary widely. These may include hot flashes, chills, night sweats, sleep problems, emotional changes, weight gain, slower metabolism, thinning hair, and dry skin.

Popular ingredients for menopause health include:

Soy isoflavones, equol, black cohosh extract, red clover extract, vitamin D, magnesium, marine pine bark extract, Bacopa monnieri extract, ashwagandha extract, evening primrose oil, angelica root extract, chasteberry, licorice extract, fenugreek extract, and beta-cryptoxanthin.

1. Soy Isoflavones

Soy isoflavones are dietary supplement ingredients isolated from soybeans and are rich in phytoestrogenic isoflavones.

Research found that after 51 healthy menopausal women consumed 60 mg of isoflavones daily for 12 weeks, the frequency and severity of hot flashes decreased by 57%.

Another significant change associated with menopause is a decline in bone mineral density, which can contribute to osteoporosis. Among different skeletal sites, the spine appears to be particularly sensitive to isoflavones.

In healthy menopausal women, daily supplementation with more than 90 mg of isoflavones for six months significantly reduced spinal bone loss and improved the loss of bone mineral density.

In addition, soy isoflavones may act as an estrogen substitute and help reduce cardiovascular disease risk.

2. Black Cohosh Extract

Black cohosh is a well-known botanical ingredient used to support menopausal symptoms. Its major constituents include triterpene glycosides, phenolic compounds, flavonoids, and alkaloids.

Research has found that black cohosh has estrogen-like functions, including the potential to relieve hot flashes, reduce depressive symptoms, and help prevent bone loss.

For example, black cohosh triterpene glycosides may slow osteoporosis in menopausal women by reducing bone marrow fat burden and decreasing the secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines.

The Menopause Supplement Market Is Growing

Consumers are increasingly paying attention to healthy aging and hormone-free products.

Ingredients such as soy isoflavones and equol may help support women experiencing physiological, emotional, and hormone-related changes during menopause. As a result, the menopause supplement market is entering a new phase of growth.

According to Future Market Insights, the global menopause supplement market is expected to reach approximately US$934.8 million in 2024, and the global market is projected to reach approximately US$1.7101 billion by 2035.

The continued development of women’s health applications, together with growing consumer interest in healthy aging and non-hormonal approaches, is expected to create further opportunities for menopause-focused dietary supplements and functional ingredients.
