Renowned for its exceptionally high vitamin C content, acerola is often grouped with camu camu and Kakadu plum as one of the world's three richest natural sources of vitamin C. Beyond its remarkable nutritional value, acerola also contains a diverse range of bioactive compounds—including polyphenols, carotenoids, anthocyanins, flavonoids, vitamins A, E, and B complex, as well as essential minerals—that contribute to its broad spectrum of biological activities.

Mature fruits have a pleasantly sweet-tart flavor and aromatic fragrance. Because of their cherry-like appearance, they became known as acerola cherries. Native to the Caribbean region of the West Indies in tropical America, the fruit is also commonly referred to as the West Indian cherry.

Acerola is exceptionally rich in vitamin C, providing approximately 1,677.6 mg per 100 g of fresh fruit—about 31 times the amount found in lemons. Research suggests that ascorbic acid from acerola acts synergistically with epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) from green tea to reduce oxidative stress in macrophages during inflammatory responses and regulate inflammation by decreasing the secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines, including IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α.

Brazil is the world's largest producer of acerola. To preserve its genetic diversity, the Federal Rural University of Pernambuco established the Active Germplasm Bank of West Indian Cherry in June 1998.

North America currently represents the largest share of the global acerola extract market, supported by its advanced food industry and strong consumer awareness of natural ingredients. The United States continues to lead innovation in acerola-based products.

Although acerola has also been introduced into China, climatic conditions result in relatively low fruit production, limiting its commercial cultivation. Consequently, it is more commonly grown as an ornamental plant.

Because fresh acerola fruit is highly perishable, commercial products are typically available as fruit puree, concentrated juice, or powder. Powdered acerola extract has become particularly popular because of its improved stability, extended shelf life, and ease of incorporation into a wide range of formulations.
