Global Weight Management Ingredients: Trending Solutions from China, Japan, and the United States

Obesity is a major global health issue, driving strong demand for weight management solutions. Consumers now look for science-backed ingredients that work in different ways—such as regulating fat metabolism, controlling appetite, boosting energy use, balancing blood sugar, or shaping gut bacteria. As a result, the global market for weight management supplements is growing quickly, thanks to rising health awareness, new technologies, and wider acceptance of functional foods. Different regions favor different ingredients based on local traditions, regulations, and consumer habits. In China, botanicals like lotus leaf, L-carnitine, and Alisma are popular for supporting fat metabolism. Japan, known for its advanced functional food market, highlights ellagic acid, black ginger flavonoids, D-allulose, and rosehip extract, all backed by scientific studies. In the U.S., common choices include apple cider vinegar, probiotics, green tea extract, caffeine, berberine, MCTs, and dietary fiber, reflecting current trends in metabolic health. This article gives a brief overview of these representative ingredients from China, Japan, and the U.S., covering their origins, biological effects, how they may work, market uses, and available research, offering a snapshot of today’s global weight management ingredient landscape.

 

As obesity rates continue to rise worldwide, weight management has become a major focus of public health initiatives and nutritional research. Consumers are increasingly looking beyond conventional dieting and exercise, turning to scientifically supported functional ingredients that may assist in maintaining healthy body weight as part of a balanced lifestyle. At the same time, regulatory approvals, clinical research, and innovations in food technology have accelerated the commercialization of weight management ingredients across global markets.

Against this backdrop, various countries have developed unique ingredient portfolios that reflect their local dietary traditions, scientific research priorities, and consumer preferences. From traditional Chinese botanical extracts to Japan's functional food ingredients and America's rapidly evolving dietary supplement formulations, the global weight management market continues to diversify, offering consumers a broader range of evidence-based nutritional options.

According to a sample study involving 220 million participants published in The Lancet in 2024, the number of people living with obesity worldwide exceeded one billion by 2022. Facing this significant global health challenge, weight management has become one of the central topics in public health.

The growing prevalence of obesity has also driven the rapid expansion of the weight management economy. According to Grand View Research, the global weight loss supplement market was valued at approximately USD 33.14 billion in 2024 and is projected to reach USD 71.59 billion by 2030, registering a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 14.17% from 2025 to 2030.

China

1. Lotus Leaf (Nelumbo nucifera)

Lotus leaf is the dried leaf of the lotus plant (Nelumbo nucifera), a member of the family Nymphaeaceae. In 2002, it was included in China's List of Substances Traditionally Used as Both Food and Medicine issued by the former Ministry of Health. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), lotus leaf is neutral in nature and bitter in flavor, entering the liver, spleen, and stomach meridians. It has traditionally been used to clear summer heat, eliminate dampness, promote the ascent of clear yang, cool the blood, and stop bleeding.

The famous Chinese medical classic Compendium of Materia Medica (Ben Cao Gang Mu) records that "taking lotus leaf can make people become lean." Modern studies have shown that lotus leaves contain numerous bioactive compounds, including alkaloids (such as nuciferine and pronuciferine), flavonoids (including quercetin and isoquercitrin), polysaccharides, and organic acids. Among these constituents, nuciferine has attracted particular attention for its lipid-lowering and weight management potential.

Research indicates that nuciferine may exert its anti-obesity effects primarily by inhibiting lipase activity, regulating the expression of genes associated with lipid metabolism, and promoting energy expenditure, thereby supporting fat reduction.

Today, lotus leaf is widely used in products such as lotus leaf tea and compound powdered beverages. Common ingredient combinations include lotus leaf with cassia seeds, lotus leaf with hawthorn, and lotus leaf with dried tangerine peel.

2. L-Carnitine

L-Carnitine, also known simply as carnitine, is an amino acid-like compound with the molecular formula C₇H₁₅NO₃. The human body is capable of synthesizing L-carnitine in organs such as the liver, kidneys, and brain, while additional amounts can be obtained through meat consumption.

In 1958, Fritz and colleagues first demonstrated the critical role of L-carnitine in the oxidation of long-chain fatty acids within muscle and cardiac tissues. L-carnitine enhances the rate of β-oxidation of fatty acids, thereby accelerating mitochondrial fat utilization.

Additionally, L-carnitine binds to fatty acids and transports them from the cytoplasm into the mitochondria, where they are metabolized to generate energy.

3. Alisma (Alisma orientale)

Alisma is the dried tuber of Alisma orientale (Sam.) Juzep. or Alisma plantago-aquatica Linn., belonging to the family Alismataceae. The cross-section of the tuber appears yellowish-white with numerous small pores. The plant was first mentioned in the ancient Chinese classic The Book of Songs (Shijing), while its medicinal application was first documented in Shennong's Classic of Materia Medica, where it was classified as a superior-grade medicinal herb. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, Alisma is sweet, bland, and cold in nature, entering the kidney and bladder meridians.

Studies suggest that the anti-obesity effects of Alisma are primarily associated with its ability to regulate abnormal glucose and lipid metabolism. Its proposed mechanisms include activation of AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR) signaling pathways, thereby accelerating lipid breakdown.

From the perspective of Traditional Chinese Medicine, metabolic disorders are closely associated with the accumulation of dampness resulting from spleen deficiency. Alisma is traditionally believed to promote urination and eliminate dampness, helping alleviate internal fluid retention caused by spleen deficiency while also clearing heat, removing turbidity, and supporting healthy lipid metabolism.

Japan

In recent years, weight management has remained one of the most popular application areas in the Japanese functional food market. As of June 22, 2026, Japan's Consumer Affairs Agency (CAA) had officially notified 106 Foods with Function Claims (FFC) that carry weight reduction-related functional claims.

One of the defining characteristics of Japan's functional food market is the diversity of approved weight management claims. Depending on the scientific evidence submitted, products may claim benefits such as reducing visceral fat, reducing subcutaneous fat, suppressing fat absorption, and promoting fat metabolism, among others.

Among these 106 registered functional foods, the most frequently used ingredients include ellagic acid, polymethoxyflavones (from black ginger), 3-(4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl)propionic acid (HMPA), medium-chain fatty acids (caprylic acid and capric acid), indigestible dextrin (dietary fiber), D-allulose, tea catechins (including gallated catechins), proanthocyanidins (from apples and Acacia bark), isoflavones (from kudzu flower), and hydroxycitric acid (HCA).

These ingredients represent some of the most established and commercially successful weight management ingredients currently available in the Japanese market.

1. Ellagic Acid

Ellagic acid is a polyphenolic compound belonging to the ellagitannin family and is a dimeric derivative of gallic acid. It is widely distributed in various fruits—including pomegranates, persimmons, raspberries, and peaches—as well as oil-bearing seeds such as walnuts and almonds, and a variety of vegetables.

Ellagic acid has demonstrated multiple mechanisms that may contribute to body fat reduction.

Animal studies have shown that ellagic acid dose-dependently reduces lipid accumulation in mice and zebrafish fed a high-fat diet. It also lowers serum levels of the pro-inflammatory cytokines IL-6 and TNF-α in mice while improving hepatic steatosis.

Cell-based studies further demonstrate that ellagic acid can bind stably to peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARγ), thereby inhibiting lipid accumulation in hepatocytes.

2. Polymethoxyflavones (Black Ginger)

Black ginger, also known as Thai ginseng (Kaempferia parviflora), is a medicinal herb native to Southeast Asia. It has attracted considerable scientific and commercial attention because it is rich in polymethoxyflavones, a class of bioactive compounds.

Current research suggests that these compounds help regulate metabolic pathways by promoting fat breakdown while reducing lipid accumulation, thereby supporting healthy weight management.

In recent years, polymethoxyflavones derived from black ginger have performed exceptionally well in Japan's functional food market. They have become one of the country's signature weight management ingredients and consistently rank among the leading ingredients used in fat reduction products.

3. D-Allulose

D-Allulose, also known simply as allulose, is a naturally occurring rare sugar. It is a ketohexose that exists in small quantities in foods such as figs, kiwifruit, raisins, wheat, maple syrup, and honey.

In 2011, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) first recognized D-allulose as safe for use as a dietary supplement and food ingredient. Since then, it has received regulatory approval in multiple countries and regions, including the United States, Japan, South Korea, Canada, and Australia.

In July 2025, D-allulose was officially approved by China's National Health Commission as a New Food Ingredient, allowing its use in food applications within China.

A clinical trial published in 2023 evaluated 26 overweight or obese adults with type 2 diabetes. Participants consumed two servings of a diabetes-specific oral nutritional supplement containing D-allulose every morning for eight consecutive weeks. The results demonstrated that D-allulose significantly improved glycemic markers while also significantly reducing body weight, body mass index (BMI), and waist circumference.

4. Rosehip Tiliroside

Rosehip is the fruit of Rosa canina, a member of the Rosaceae family, and has a long history of both culinary and medicinal use throughout Europe and North America. Rich in vitamin C and various polyphenols, rosehip has long been recognized for its skin health benefits and is often referred to as a "superfruit."

Tiliroside is a flavonoid glycoside and one of the major bioactive constituents found in rosehip.

Human clinical studies have shown that daily supplementation with 100 mg of a rosehip extract containing tiliroside can significantly reduce body weight and total body fat area.

In addition to its potential role in weight management, tiliroside has also demonstrated the potential to lower uric acid by reducing uric acid levels in both plasma and the liver.

United States

In the United States, the most popular weight management ingredients center around apple cider vinegar, caffeine, green tea extract, green coffee bean extract, L-carnitine, white kidney bean extract, and conjugated linoleic acid (CLA). These ingredients are commonly combined with various forms of dietary fiber and have become staple formulations among Amazon's best-selling weight management supplements.

Notably, as regulatory scrutiny has become increasingly stringent and consumer interest in GLP-1 medications continues to grow, several emerging ingredients—including probiotics, berberine, medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs), and citrus peel extract—have rapidly gained popularity in the U.S. market.

1. Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar is produced from apple juice through a two-step fermentation process. During the first stage, yeast and bacteria convert fructose into ethanol. In the second stage, the ethanol is oxidized into acetic acid. In addition to acetic acid, apple cider vinegar also contains malic acid, citric acid, small amounts of vitamins (such as B vitamins and vitamin C), minerals including potassium, calcium, and magnesium, as well as soluble dietary fiber such as pectin.

Apple cider vinegar is believed to help prevent obesity through multiple mechanisms, including delaying gastric emptying to enhance satiety, activating AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), and modulating the gut microbiota.

Today, apple cider vinegar is available in a wide variety of product formats, with gummies being one of the most representative and commercially successful dosage forms.

2. Probiotics

According to SPINS, sales of weight management probiotics on Amazon increased by 84% year over year in 2025, a trend largely driven by the growing popularity of GLP-1 medications.

In 2001, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the World Health Organization (WHO) jointly defined probiotics as "live microorganisms that, when administered in adequate amounts, confer a health benefit on the host."

At present, several well-studied probiotic strains—including Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis B420, Lactobacillus gasseri BNR17, and Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis CECT 8145—have obtained Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) status in the United States, further confirming their safety for use in conventional foods and dietary supplements.

3. Berberine

Berberine, also known as berberine hydrochloride, is a benzylisoquinoline alkaloid that appears as a yellow crystalline compound. It can be obtained either through extraction from natural botanical sources or through chemical synthesis.

Berberine was first isolated in 1830 by Buchner and Herberger.

According to SPINS, sales of berberine products increased by 92.6% year over year in 2024.

Berberine from Xi'an Innov Biotechnology

Driven by influencers on TikTok, berberine has been widely promoted as a natural alternative to Ozempic (semaglutide), an FDA-approved prescription medication indicated for glycemic control and weight management in individuals with type 2 diabetes.

A 2022 meta-analysis that synthesized data from 18 studies evaluating body weight and 23 studies evaluating body mass index (BMI) found that participants receiving berberine supplementation experienced significant reductions in both body weight and BMI.
